Applications of Working and Learning
The Applications of Working and Learning (AWAL) project helps teachers of grades K-12 throughout adult education connect the curriculum they teach in the classroom with how that curriculum is used in the workplace. They then develop hands-on learning activities that can be used in the classroom, and share them with other educators through the AWAL website.

Essential Skills Portfolio Developer
The Adult Skills Assessment and Career Planner is a basic skills assessment and planning tool to help those who are preparing for employment. The Planner helps people to assess their Essential Skills and compare them with the skills necessary to participate actively in many occupations. It includes three sections: "Self-Assessment", "Choose an Occupation" and "Portfolio Builder".
International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS)
The goal of the IALS was to create comparable literacy profiles across national, linguistic and cultural boundaries. Successive waves of the survey now encompass almost 30 countries globally. The survey was originally conducted in the Fall of 1994.
How do your skills Measure Up?
This self-assessment tool consists of a set of activities that may be used by an individual to test their skills in Reading, Document Use and Numeracy. The activities are based on real workplace tasks and involve the use of authentic workplace materials. Full step-by-step solutions are also provided for those who want to turn this into a learning tool. Activities on the site include practicing for a TOWES test, exploring careers through trying out some typical reading, document use and numeracy tasks from 25 different occupations, as well as testing your skills in Reading, Document Use and Numeracy.

National Occupational Classification
The National Occupational Classification (NOC) is Canada's authoritative resource on occupational information. It's used every day by thousands of people to understand the jobs found throughout Canada's labour market. The NOC is based on skill type and level, and contains up-to-date information. People can browse by job title or NOC number to learn about hundreds of occupations and their place in the Canadian labour market.
Ontario Skills Passport
The Ontario Skills Passport program provides each student in Ontario with a record of the skills they have demonstrated in their various co-op and other work placements. It records which Essential Skills have been demonstrated, the level of complexity of the tasks in which those skills were demonstrated, and the student’s level of competency in performing the tasks. The Ontario Skills Passport is currently being piloted in various locations across Ontario. Its objective is to facilitate successful school to work transitions for students.
Red Seal National Occupational Analyses
These occupational profiles provide descriptions of tasks performed by tradespeople on the job across Canada. The Red Seal, or interprovincial endorsement on a certificate of qualification, allows for the mobility of skilled workers between various jurisdictions of Canada where their trade is Red Seal designated.

Test of Workplace Essential Skills (TOWES) is a versatile test that has several uses. For educators, it can be part of an initial skills assessment or a final evaluation. It is changing the way that educators build workplace literacy skills curricula. For career counselors, TOWES provides an accurate assessment of skills required by front line occupations. For the business community, TOWES is being used for job applicant assessment, succession planning and for determining training needs. The test uses authentic workplace materials and authentic tasks that reflect how reading, document use and numeracy skills are used in the workplace.
