Essential Skills and Apprenticeship

Having strong essential skills such as reading, writing, document use and thinking can help apprentices succeed in their training and in the workplace. Investments in essential skills can benefit both apprentices and employers by:

  • building confidence to learn the technical skills of a trade;
  • fostering greater return on investments in on-the-job training; and
  • increasing both per-hour earnings and opportunities for promotion.

Using Essential Skills and Apprenticeship Tools

A series of tools have been developed to support apprentices in their training and to be better prepared for a career in the trades. The tools can be used independently or with the assistance of a tradesperson, trainer, employer, teacher or mentor. Learners may choose to use all or some of the tools depending on which they feel would be the most helpful. The tools are divided into three categories:

  • Inform tools: Understand how essential skills are used in the trades;
  • Assess tools: Learn about individual essential skills strengths and areas for improvement; and
  • Support tools: Improve essential skills and increase success in an apprenticeship program.

Mail or fax your request to HRSDC's Publications/Distribution Unit to order copies of the tools.
