Dispute Resolution

The Dispute Resolution Service was established to assist employers and unionized employees in resolving disputes that might arise in industrial relations. The Service also aims to help improve labour-management relationships.

To do this, the Dispute Resolution Service offers employers and employees various tools and services, such as:

  • conciliation: an informal labour dispute and conflict resolution procedure involving a specialist and a conciliation officer; and
  • mediation: a procedure that complements conciliation. It is also designed to reach an informal resolution of labour disputes and conflicts through the involvement of a mediation officer.

It is particularly interesting to note that statistics show more than nine out of 10 disputes are resolved without strikes or lockouts, often through the conciliation or mediation services of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.
